ABOUT

A Word From The Chair

Rachel Brown In these busy times it is hard to keep up with the many changes that are happening all over the world. The political, cultural, economic and the ever increasing environmental changes have changed our world dramatically in the last couple of years. The impacts affect us greatly whether negatively or positively and we remain strong in these tough times.

The INIHKD conference in Seattle was fantastic bringing indigenous peoples from all over together to share their stories, histories, trauma and their pathways to healing. Moving from trauma to healing seemed to be a strong theme throughout the conference. This theme seemed to bring about strong ideas, developments of interventions, programmes and projects providing an avenue for new health and research collaborations.

Once such collaboration is a newly funded $5M Health Research Council of New Zealand (HRC) Programme; He Kokanga Whare: Maori Intergenerational Trauma Healing led by Dr Paul Reynolds from Te Atawhai O Te Ao based in Whanganui. Its collaborations include iwi; Ngai Tahu and researchers from The Indigenous Wellness Research Institute (IWRI) in Seattle led by Professor Karina Walters. The programme is the first non-university to be awarded this type of funding in HRC’s 20 year history. It will be exciting to see the developments that arise from these collaborations.

The next INIHKD conference will be hosted by our Australian counterparts. The date is set for the 24th - 28th September 2012, Venue: University of Queensland Campus, St Lucia, Brisbane.

Keep a close eye on our website as we bring you more information, including dates for call for abstracts and any potential sponsorship opportunities.

We look forward to being there.

Rachel
